This jacket ensemble was commissioned by Hoffman Fabrics for the Houston Quilt Festival in 2000. I was invited to their warehouse to pick out my fabric choices and given carte blanche on the design. Can you imagine shopping for fabric with a shopping cart in a warehouse as big as a grocery store? I was a kid in a very big candy store, what fun I had!
The jacket was strip pieced first, cut into sections and stitched with additional vertical strips. The embellishment of ribbonworked flowers and leaves pick meander along a chenille ric rac trim. The ribbons and silk ribbon embroidery pick up the colors of the Bali Batik fabrics perfectly. Additional embellishment of metal charms, glass beads and vintage Bakelite and celluloid buttons were added to enhance the overall design.
The skirt is made from the very colorful Bali fabrics as well as the matching hat. The hat is embellished with wire ribbon flowers and leaves. The jewelry ensemble worn with this is The Edwardian. |
