Fandango- vest

crazy pieced fans on wearable art garment

The first handmade quilt, my crib quilt had been given to me by my grandmother. The ladies at her church made these pieced memories as fundraiser projects in a good old fashioned "quilting bee".

The inspiration for the fan shape on the Fandango vest came from an old pieced quilt that I had seen in museum. The fans are stitched to a muslin base then stitched to the vest fabric. I also incorporated pieced yo-yo's made from the leftover bits of material used in the fans.

The fans are hand embroidered in the feather stitch using metallic threads then hand embellished with vintage (see the gold oval shaped beads on the top two fans) and new glass beads. I had a few whimsical paper mâche charms (like the butterfly and the mermaid on the orange ribbon down the center), and several metal heart shaped charms that seemed to carry on the theme.

Many of the vintage brass and glass buttons on this piece were from a wonderful collection that was given to me. I also incorporated some vintage pieces of jewelry like the orange daisy with the rhinestone center in the middle of the piece. I turned the metal earring finding into a shank and stitched it in place.
